MTL vs DTL (and RDL): The Difference, Explained Properly

Mouth-to-lung, direct-to-lung and restricted direct-lung: how they differ in draw, coils, power and liquid — and how to pick yours.

Every vape is designed around a way of inhaling. Get the style right and almost everything else — coils, power, liquid — falls into place. Get it wrong and even a great device feels wrong.

The short version

  • MTL (mouth-to-lung): draw into your mouth first, then inhale. Tight draw, small vapour, low power.
  • DTL (direct-to-lung): inhale straight into your lungs. Open draw, big vapour, high power.
  • RDL (restricted direct-lung): in between — a direct inhale with some resistance.

The difference between MTL and DTL

MTL RDL DTL
Draw Tight, like a straw Moderate Open, like a deep breath
Typical coil resistance Around 0.8Ω and up Around 0.4–0.8Ω Below about 0.4Ω
Typical power Low (often under 20W) Medium High (often 40W+)
Vapour Modest Medium Large
Liquid 50/50 or higher PG; higher nicotine, often salts Balanced High VG; low nicotine
Liquid use Low Medium High
Typical devices Pods, MTL tanks, many boro bridges Adjustable pods, AIOs Box mods with sub-ohm tanks

These ranges are rules of thumb; always follow the range printed on your coil.

The difference between MTL and DTL coils

MTL coils are higher resistance with small wicking holes and a narrow airflow path, designed for low power. DTL coils are low resistance with larger wicking ports and wide airflow, built to vaporise a lot of liquid at high power. Using one in the wrong setup is a common cause of burnt hits and leaks. More in coil resistance explained.

Which liquid goes with which style?

MTL setups usually run 50/50 or higher-PG liquid and higher nicotine strengths; DTL setups use high-VG liquid at low nicotine strengths. Mixing those up — a high-strength nicotine salt in a big DTL tank — makes for a very harsh experience. See PG vs VG and nicotine strength explained.

How to choose

  • Want something discreet, efficient and familiar? MTL — e.g. the XROS 6 or ECO NANO PLUS.
  • Want a bit more vapour without going big? RDL — e.g. the ARGUS G4 on its 0.4Ω setting, or a boro device with an open bridge.
  • Want big flavour and clouds? DTL — e.g. the DRAG 6 or Aegis Legend 5.

Frequently asked questions

What does MTL stand for?

Mouth-to-lung. Full explainer: what is MTL?

What does DTL stand for?

Direct-to-lung. Full explainer: what is DTL?

Can one device do both?

Some can, with different coils and adjustable airflow — multi-resistance pods and many AIOs cover MTL to RDL; full DTL usually needs a sub-ohm setup.

Is MTL or DTL better for beginners?

Most people moving from cigarettes or disposables find MTL more familiar. See choosing your first refillable device.
