What Is a Boro Mod? Boro Tanks, Bridges and the Billet Box Explained

Boro devices are the enthusiast end of all-in-one vaping: a box, a swappable boro tank and a bridge you can build yourself. Here is how they work.

A boro mod (or “boro device”) is an all-in-one vape built around a removable reservoir called a boro tank. The tank slides into a slot in the device, and inside it sits a bridge — the part that holds the coil. Swap the bridge and you change the whole vape, from a tight mouth-to-lung draw to a looser restricted-lung one.

The short version

  • Boro device = box + slot-in boro tank + swappable bridge.
  • Bridges can be rebuildable (you build and wick the coil) or take pre-made coils.
  • The format started with the Billet Box; many brands now make boro-compatible devices and bridges.

Where the name comes from

“Boro” is generally said to come from borosilicate, the heat-resistant glass used for the tanks of the original Billet Box. The name stuck long after tanks started being made from other materials.

How a boro device works

  1. The device — a box with a battery (often a single external 18650), a chipset, a fire button and a slot for the tank.
  2. The boro tank — a small reservoir that slides into that slot and holds the liquid.
  3. The bridge — sits inside the tank and holds the coil. Air flows up through it, past the coil and out of the drip tip on top of the device.

Because boro tanks and bridges follow a broadly shared format, many bridges from different makers fit many boro devices — though fit isn’t guaranteed, so always check compatibility before buying.

Rebuildable bridges vs pre-made coils

Rebuildable bridge (RBA) Coil adapter / coil tank
Setup You build and wick the coil Drop in a pre-made coil
Running cost Very low (wire and cotton) Ongoing coil purchases
Learning curve Steep at first Minimal
Flavour tuning Highest Depends on the coil

Devices like the Vaperz Cloud San AIO DNA80C and XR-60 ship with a coil-based boro tank, so you can start without building anything. The modular dotmod dotAIO X adds boro compatibility through an optional module.

Pros and cons

  • Pros: compact, very tunable, often premium chipsets, low running cost with rebuildables, huge choice of bridges.
  • Cons: pricier up front, a learning curve, external batteries on many devices, and compatibility to check before buying parts.

Is a boro mod right for you?

If you enjoy tuning your setup and want one compact device, yes. If you just want something that works with zero effort, a pod is the better buy — see how to choose a pod system. Still deciding? Start with what is an AIO vape and how to choose an AIO.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to build coils on a boro?

No — many boro devices and tanks take pre-made coils.

Do boro devices have built-in batteries?

Some do; many take a single 18650. If yours uses external cells, read battery safety basics.

Are boro mods MTL or DTL?

Mostly MTL and RDL, depending on the bridge and airflow pin. See MTL vs DTL.
