What Is MTL? Mouth-to-Lung Vaping, Explained

Mouth-to-lung is the way most people start. Here's what it means, why it feels the way it does, and what devices suit it.

MTL stands for mouth-to-lung. You draw vapour into your mouth first, hold it briefly, then inhale into your lungs — a bit like drinking through a narrow straw.

Comparing styles? Our full MTL vs DTL guide covers coils, power and liquid side by side.

What it feels like

MTL draws are tighter, with more resistance. They produce less vapour per puff than direct-lung vaping and tend to suit higher-resistance coils and lower power.

Who it suits

  • People moving from smoking, because the draw feels familiar
  • Pod system users, since most pods are designed for MTL
  • Anyone who wants discreet vapour and lower liquid consumption

MTL vs DTL at a glance

MTL DTL
Draw Tight, restricted Open, airy
Typical liquid Higher PG, often salts Higher VG, lower nicotine
Vapour Modest Large
Typical device Pods, MTL tanks, AIOs Sub-ohm tanks, larger mods

Read the other side in What is DTL?, and see coil resistance explained for how coils fit into it.

Worth knowing

There’s also RDL — restricted direct-lung — which sits in between. Many modern pods and AIOs live there.
