A quick clean fixes a surprising number of problems: muted flavour, gurgling, weak hits and sticky residue. Here’s how to do it without damaging anything.

Golden rule

Never get water inside the device body or charging port, and never run water through a pod or coil with built-in cotton unless the manufacturer says you can.

How to clean a vape mouthpiece

  1. Remove the pod or drip tip.
  2. Wipe the outside with a dry paper towel.
  3. Roll a corner of tissue (or use a cotton bud) to clear condensation from the opening.
  4. Removable drip tips can be rinsed in warm water — dry completely before refitting.

How to clean a pod

  1. Wipe the outside and the bottom contacts with a dry tissue.
  2. Blow gently through the mouthpiece into a tissue to clear trapped liquid.
  3. Wipe the airflow area.
  4. If the pod has a built-in coil and still tastes gunky, it’s usually time to replace it rather than wash it.

How to clean a vape tank

  1. Empty the tank and remove the coil.
  2. Rinse the glass and metal parts in warm water (coil out!).
  3. Let every part dry fully — overnight is ideal.
  4. Reassemble with a new or primed coil — see how to prime a coil.

How to clean the contacts and battery area

Use a dry tissue or a cotton bud only. Liquid on the contacts can stop a device firing. Let it air-dry if anything got wet, and don’t charge it until it’s completely dry.

How to clean sticky vape residue

Residue on the outside wipes off with a slightly damp cloth, followed by a dry one. Keep moisture away from ports and buttons.

Why does my vape get clogged?

Condensation builds up in the chimney and airflow over time, especially with hard or frequent puffs. Clearing it every few days prevents most clogs and gurgling. If your vape is also leaking, read why is my vape leaking?

How to clean vape coils

Replaceable pre-built coils aren’t really designed to be cleaned — rinsing rarely restores them. Replace them instead. Rebuildable coils (RBA decks and boro bridges) can be dry-burned and re-wicked, which is one reason people choose them — see what is an AIO vape.
